Taipei City – The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Congress has recently concluded, and it has been announced that Mark Smith (Falmouth, N.S.) has been selected by the WBSC Softball Hall of Fame Commission for induction to the 2022 class in the Coach category.
Mark Smith led Canada's National Teams to WBSC World Cup podiums in an unparalleled three different categories. Over his 20+ year coaching career, his teams registered a Bronze medal at the Junior Men's World Cup, a Silver and a Bronze at Men's World Cups and three Bronze medals at Women's World Cups, followed by a Bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. In the WBSC Americas region, he led Pan American Games teams to two Gold medals and two Silver medals, while also serving as an assistant coach for another Gold medal. He also had five WBSC Americas Pan American Championship podium finishes.
Mark has been instrumental in the progress of coaching and athlete development in Canada. He provided leadership and expertise to Softball Canada’s Coaching Development Committee, led countless coaching and athlete development clinics, was part of the creation of the Canpitch program (developing and teaching the how to pitch curriculum) and played a key role in the development of Softball Canada’s Long-Term Player Development program. He was recognized in 2016 by the Coaching Association of Canada as the Coach of the Year (Jack Donohue Award) and has been utilized by Canada's Own the Podium group as a key leader and mentor.
