Softball Canada is saddened to announce the passing of Donald R. MacDonald on January 7, 2020.
Donald R. began his administrative career in softball in 1983 as the President of the Antigonish Guysborough Rural Softball League, and went on to attend nine Softball Canada Annual General Meetings as a voting delegate for Softball Nova Scotia from 1985 to 1993. Throughout that time, he served as the team manager for several Nova Scotia teams at Canadian Championships, as well as the 1989 Canada Games. His organizational and communication skills stood out through his involvement and he always displayed a strong passion for the sport of softball.
In 1993, he was elected to Softball Canada’s Board of Directors, a position he held until 2011 after being re-elected several times. Donald R. supervised 17 consecutive Canadian Championships from 1994 to 2010, and was very well-known at softball diamonds throughout the country. He helped Softball Canada develop Canadian Championship schedules and was always prepared for every possible situation in his supervisor assignments. During his tenure as a member of the Board of Directors, he played a very active role on several committees, including the Men’s National Team Committee, the Officiating Development Committee and the Finance and Audit Committee.
Through his board and committee work, Donald R. was always recognized as someone who could be counted on to complete a task in a thorough and timely manner. He assisted to keep Softball Canada in a positive financial situation during his time on the Finance Committee.
