Barranquilla, Colombia – The Canadian U17 Junior Women’s National Team took its second loss in as many days by losing 3-0 to Mexico on Thursday. The Canadian squad ran into a tough pitcher in Desiree Hernandez, who limited the red and white to four hits and got key strikeouts on several occasions to keep Canada off the scoreboard.

Mexico got the game started with a double and drew a pair of walks to load the bases in the top of the first inning, but Canadian pitcher Katie Korstrom (Abbotsford, B.C.) was able to get out of the inning. In the bottom of the second, it was Canada’s turn to put the pressure on, loading the bases with no outs on a walk by Deanna Grahek (Georgetown, Ont.) and back-to-back singles by Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) and Ella Herrewig (Surrey, B.C.). However, the next three batters struck out to keep the game scoreless.

In the top of the fourth, the game went into a rain delay that lasted over an hour and Mexico was able to get to Korstrom when play resumed. A walk and a single put two runners on base, and after a passed ball moved them up to second and third, the next batter hit a ground ball off the third baseman for a two-run double. Mexico went on to add a run on a passed ball in the top of the sixth for an insurance run, making the score 3-0. Canada started the bottom of the inning with a pair of singles by Emma Dorval (Surrey, B.C.) and Erin Murphy (Surrey, B.C.), but a pair of fielder’s choices and a strikeout stopped the rally. Team Canada was unable to get anything going in the seventh as Mexico earned the shutout win.

Box Score: Mexico 3 vs. Canada 0

Korstrom took the loss in the pitcher’s circle, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three in four innings of work. Rawnie Weststrate (North Delta, B.C.) allowed a run on one hit and two walks with one strikeout in an inning and two thirds of relief, with Samantha Ryan (Monroe, N.Y.) throwing an inning and a third without giving up a hit. Canada’s four hits – all singles – went to Dorval, Murphy, Miller and Herrewig.

The loss dropped Canada’s Super Round record to 2-2, while Mexico improved to 3-1. Team Canada will finish the Super Round against Peru (1-3) at 4:30pm Colombia time (5:30pm EDT) on Friday. Live streaming is available on the Game Time streaming platform and the WBSC YouTube page.
