Sincelejo, Colombia – The U18 Canadian Men’s National Team opened the 2023 WBSC Americas Pan American Championship with a 4-0 win against host Colombia Monday night in seven innings.
Cohen Christner (New Hamburg, Ont.) got the start in the circle for Canada, striking out 16 batters to go on to pitch a perfect game. Christner surrendered zero hits and zero runs over seven innings, while walking zero.
Team Canada opened the scoring in the second inning after Nolan Bultena (Arthur, Ont.) singled on a ground ball, scoring Mike Walker (Simcoe, Ont.), who advanced on a wild pitch after a walk. Camden Weatherbee (Brookfield, N.S.) then homered to center field, scoring Adrian Green (Carbonear, N.L.), who made it on base on a walk, in the top of the seventh for the Canadians to make it 4-0.
Christner led Canada with two hits in four at bats. Weatherbee went one-for-four at the plate as the second baseman led the team with two runs batted in.
Green led Team Canada with three walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, piling up eight walks in the game.
The Canadians were dominant and didn't commit a single error to earn their first win of the tournament.
