Ottawa, Ont. – Softball Canada and the Men’s National Team coaching staff are pleased to announce eight (8) athletes selected as core players that will represent Team Canada at the 2024 WBSC Men’s Softball World Cup Group Stage. The event is slated to occur from July 10 to 14, 2024, in Prince Albert, Sask.
“The Men’s National Team coaching staff is excited to announce our eight core athletes for the WBSC World Cup Group Stage in Prince Albert” stated John Stuart, Head Coach of Team Canada. “These eight players bring a lot of experience playing for previous National Teams. Their leadership and attention to detail will be key to the success of our team at this event.”
The coaching staff will finalize the eight remaining athletes on the World Cup roster after a Men’s National Team Development Camp that will be held from May 15-20 in Kelowna, B.C. The camp will consist of two days of scrimmage and skill testing followed by the Kelowna May Days tournament.
This year, the Men’s World Cup will feature three group stages. Canada has been placed in Group B from July 10 to 14 in Prince Albert, Sask. at Max Power Ball Fields at Prime Ministers Park. The WBSC officially released the teams that will be competing in Group B. No. 15 Israel who received a wild card and No.4 Argentina were the final two countries allocated to Group B, along with No. 3 Canada, No. 8 New Zealand, No. 11 Singapore, and No. 24 Hong Kong, China.
Group A will be played June 12-16 in Hermosillo, Mexico and will include No.1 Australia, No. 5 Czech Republic, No. 7 Venezuela, No. 9 Mexico, No. 14 Philippines, and No. 20 Dominican Republic.
Group C takes place September 17-21 in Oklahoma City, USA featuring No. 2 Japan, No. 6 USA, No. 12 Guatemala, No. 16 South Africa, No. 17 Netherlands, and No. 19 Colombia.
The top two teams from each group stage and two wild cards will qualify for the 2025 WBSC World Cup Finals that will be held July 8 to 13, 2025, in Prince Albert, Sask. Team Canada aims to build upon their success, including most recently, a silver medal at the 2022 XVII Men’s Softball World Cup. Prior achievements include back-to-back bronze medals at the 2017 and 2019 WBSC Men’s Softball World Cups and a gold medal in 2015.
