OTTAWA, July 27, 2018 - Softball Canada is saddened to report that National Team pitcher Sara Groenewegen is in serious but stable condition with pneumonia at Royal Columbian Hospital in British Columbia.
“We are all so concerned about Sara and join all Canadians in offering her and her family our thoughts at this difficult time,” said Hugh Mitchener, CEO of Softball Canada. “Sara is a fighter and stalwart member of the team and we’re hopeful for her full recovery.”
Most recently, Sara participated in the USA Softball International Cup in California and returned to Surrey for the Canada Cup. Though Sara pitched last Friday night, she was not feeling well on Sunday and was taken to hospital.
Sara’s teammates, currently in Japan preparing for the WBSC Women’s Softball World Championship (August 2-12), have been alerted to her condition. Counsellors, expert in offering support, have been made available to the family and team members.
Sara wanted so badly to participate in the WBSC Women’s Softball World Championship next week,” said Mitchener. “We’re all thinking of her right now."
Softball Canada requests that the privacy of the family and team members be respected during this difficult time.
All inquiries should be directed to Softball Canada.
