Surrey, B.C. – The Women’s National Team delivered another fantastic performance at the Canada Cup, securing a 12-0 victory over the Philippines in four innings.
Kelsey Harshman (Delta, B.C.) set the tone early, launching a leadoff home run to center field to put Canada on the board. Shortly after, Callum Pilgrim’s (Abbotsford, B.C.) sacrifice fly to center field brought home Erika Polidori (Brantford, Ont.), adding another run.
In the top of the second inning, Larissa Franklin (Maple Ridge, B.C.) capitalized on an error to advance two bases, then moved to third on a wild pitch. Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ont.) followed with a two-run homer to center field, extending Canada’s lead. The inning continued with Polidori’s line drive to left field, advancing Harshman to second. CC Wong’s (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) fielder's choice put runners on first and third with two outs. Pilgrim then smashed a three-run home run over the right field wall, pushing the score to 7-0.
The third inning saw Canada adding two more runs. Harshman’s double scored Franklin and moved Leung to third, who then scored on a passed ball. In the fourth, Pilgrim singled, followed by Zoe Hicks (Boissevain, Man.) reaching on an error. Kianna Jones (Surrey, B.C.) sealed the game with a three-run homer, bringing Pilgrim and Hicks home for the final runs, making it 12-0.
Defensively, Canada was flawless, committing no errors and allowing only two hits. Morgan Rackel (Calgary, Alta.) pitched a stellar game, facing just fourteen batters over four innings, striking out four and walking none.
Canada is set to play against Israel tonight, July 3rd, at 6:30 PM local time (9:30 PM EDT).
