Canada splits day one of playoffs at the 2023 Canada Cup

Surrey, B.C. – The Canadian Women’s National Softball Team went one and one on Saturday losing 2-1 to Triple Crown Colorado and beating Mexico 11-4 on the first day of playoffs at the 2023 Canada Cup International Softball Championship

Team Canada fell to Triple Crown Colorado 2-1 on the final play of the game in game one. Triple Crown Colorado were down 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning when they singled, scoring two runs.

Team Canada got on the board in the eighth inning after Erika Polidori (Brantford, Ont.) doubled, scoring one run.

Dawn Bodrug (Georgetown, Ont.) started in the circle for Team Canada. Bodrug allowed three hits and zero runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out five and walking two.

In game two against Mexico, Canada defeated Team Mexico 11-4 thanks in part to six runs in the third inning. Emma Entzminger (Victoria, B.C.) singled, scoring one run, Polidori singled, scoring two runs, Grace Messmer (Surrey, B.C.) singled, scoring one run, Kelsey Harshman  (Delta, B.C.) drew a walk, scoring one run, and a passed ball scored one run.

Team Canada got on the board in the top of the second inning after Kianna Jones (Surrey, B.C.) singled, and Zoe Hicks (Boissevain, Man.) hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run.

Jones hit a solo home run to center field in the top of the sixth for the Team Canada.

Sara Groenewegen (Surrey, B.C.) began the game for Team Canada. The starting pitcher gave up five hits and four runs over three innings, striking out four and walking none. Morgan Rackel (Calgary, Ont.) threw three innings of zero-run ball for Team Canada in relief. Rackel surrendered two hits, striking out four and walking one.

Polidori and Jones were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits for Team Canada. Polidori, Jones, and Hicks each drove in two runs for Team Canada. Team Canada had a strong eye at the plate, collecting four walks for the game.
