Canada Splits Day Four at XI Pan American Championship

Montería, Colombia - The Quick Story:  

On Day four of the Super Round at the XI Pan American Women’s Softball Championship, Team Canada earned a 4-1 victory over Cuba before falling 2-1 in a hard-fought matchup against Venezuela. Big swings powered Canada to its win in Game 1, while Game 2 was decided by a late-inning home run that tipped the result in Venezuela’s favour. 

Key Moment:  Game 1 vs. Cuba 

To add on to their already impressive performances at the plate this week, Callum Pilgrim and Erika Polidori would both hit homeruns to tally all the runs for Canada. Pilgrim tied the game in the second with a solo shot, before Polidori delivered a game-changing three-run homer to center field in the fifth, scoring Natalie Wideman and Emma Entzminger to seal the 4–1 win. 

Notes:   

  • Emma Entzminger went 1-for-3 with 1 run scored. 
  • Erika Polidori went 1-for-3 with 3 RBIs. 
  • Kianna Jones, Larissa Franklin, and Grace Messmer would add 3 more hits for Canada. 
  • Callum Pilgrim went 1-for-3 with 1 run scored. 
  • Morgan Reimer started in the circle pitching 6.1 innings, allowing 1 run off of 5 hits and an error while striking out 7.  
  • Dawn Bodrug came in relief in the top of the seventh, striking out the 2 batters she faced.

Key Moment: Game 2 vs. Venezuela  

With Canada leading 1-0 heading into the seventh, Venezuela delivered a two-run homer to deep left-center and gave Venezuela a 2-1 lead. Canada was unable to answer in the bottom half, despite a walk from Grace Messmer to bring the tying run on base. 

Notes:   

  • Janet Leung went 1-for-1 with a single up the middle and scored Canada’s only run.  
  • Morgan Rackel started in the circle, pitching 5 innings, allowing 1 hit, 1 walk and striking out 6. 
  • Annabel Teperson would come in as middle relief allowing 1 hit and 1 run.  
  • Dawn Bodrug would come in the circle to pitch 1 inning, allowing 1 hit, 1 run, and striking out 1.

Team Canada will be playing in the gold medal game today (July 4) against Puerto Rico at 7:30 pm COT / 8:30 pm EDT.
