Softball Canada’s Umpiring Program is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in the sport of softball. The program is administered by the Officiating Development Committee (ODC), which is led by the National Director of Umpires (NDU) and includes six Deputy Umpires-in-Chief, a Board Liaison, and the Coordinator – Officials.

 

The ODC meets up to twice per year, in addition to fulfilling numerous other functions. Meetings address a range of umpiring topics and may include the creation of working groups.

Available Positions

Deputy Umpire-in-Chief positions on the Officiating Development Committee will be open as of October 1, 2026. All positions are three-year terms.

Job Responsibilities

Deputy Umpires-in-Chief are responsible for supporting the development and administration of Softball Canada’s Umpiring Program. Responsibilities include:

• Attend up to two ODC meetings per year and contribute to the development of meeting agendas.
• Provide leadership on policy and project assignments related to officiating development.
• Provide input into the Officials Development budget.
• Direct the development and evaluation of the Officials Certification Program in collaboration with the National Director of Umpires and National Office staff.
• Instruct and evaluate the Officials Certification Program and National Umpire School Program, as required.
• Develop officiating educational resources, including National Umpire School materials, slo-pitch and fast pitch exams, and the casebook.
• Supervise Canadian Championships and evaluate working umpires, as required.
• Provide input into the selection of Umpires-in-Chief and Deputy Umpires-in-Chief at Canadian Championships.
• Recruit, select, and evaluate international umpires in collaboration with the National Director of Umpires and CEO/designated staff person.
• Recommend interpretations and amendments to playing rules in consultation with the National Director of Umpires.
• Provide input on revisions to umpire mechanics.
• Assist with reviewing officials' equipment requirements with the official supplier.
• Perform other related duties as requested by the National Director of Umpires and CEO/designated staff person.
