Bahia Blanca, Argentina - The Quick Story:   

Team Canada improved its record to 3-1 after cruising to an 11-1 over Guatemala in four innings at the U18 Men’s Pan American Championship on Thursday. The runs came early and often for the Canadian squad, putting up three runs in the bottom of the first and adding four in each of the second and third innings for the run rule victory.

Key Moments:   

The red and white got on the board quickly in the bottom of the first, with the first two batters reaching on a single and a walk followed by a run-scoring single by Maverick Turgeon and a two-run double by Kian Poitras. The following inning, Turgeon added another RBI single with Poitras delivering a two-run single, and Brett Slusar bring another run home on a hard ground out. In the third, Canada added a run on an RBI ground out by Nathan Labrie and three more on wild pitches to take a commanding 11-0 lead.

Notes:   

  • Kian Poitras and Maverick Turgeon continued to pace the Canadian offence, each collecting two hits with Poitras driving in four runs and Turgeon driving in two. Both also scored twice.
  • Colton Lecuyer and Jared Picco each doubled and scored three times.
  • Will Singer collected a hit at the plate and earned the win, throwing two hitless innings and striking out five batters. Keegan Maguire allowed one run on one hit and struck out four in two innings of relief.

With heavy rain in the forecast Saturday, the tournament organizers moved Friday’s schedule up to complete the preliminary round and playoff round on Friday. Canada’s game against Venezuela will be played 30 minutes after the completion of the 9:00am game at approximately 11:30am AST (10:30am EDT).
