2023 CALL FOR APPLICATIONS – NATIONAL DIRECTOR OF UMPIRES
Softball Canada's Umpiring Program is recognized as one of the worldwide leaders in the sport of softball. The program is administered by the Officiating Development Committee led by the National Director of Umpires (NDU), six Deputy Umpires-in-Chief, a Board Liaison and the Manager - Officials. The Officiating Development Committee meets up to twice per year in addition to numerous other functions and discusses various agenda items about umpiring as well as assigning working groups. The “Key Responsibilities”, “Selection Criteria” and “Selection Process” of the National Director of Umpires is listed below.
Softball Canada is now accepting applications for the NDU Position. The position is a 2-year term which starts on October 1, 2023.

Key Responsibilities:
- Chair Officiating Development Committee (ODC) meeting(s)
- Chair National/Provincial UIC meeting
- Consult with Program Manager (PM) to develop meeting agendas
- Consult with PM to develop ODC budget
- Supervise development & evaluation of national training & certification program resources and services
- Consult with ODC & P/T UICs on officiating program matters & issues
- Collaborate with the PM & ODC on the recruitment, selection, and evaluation of Canadian Championship umpires, UICs, DUICs and international umpires
- Oversee national umpire communication via social media and other communication tools
- Assist in organizing Blue Convention
- Provide interpretations for softball playing rules
- Recommend amendments to softball playing rules
- Represent Softball Canada officiating program at the National level (& international level, if requested)
- Expected to fulfill Safe Sport requirements upon appointment
Selection Criteria
- Minimum Secondary school completion (or equivalent educational background)
- Strong administrative experience in a volunteer or professional capacity
- Proven competence in leading/instructing/facilitating adult learning programs
- Excellent communication skills, especially written
- Demonstrated officiating supervisory experience (including umpire evaluation)
- Minimum 10 years experience officiating softball (combination of SP/FP may be relevant)
- Certified Level IV or V (International) in the Officials Certification program
- Member in good standing with P/T Association & Softball Canada
- Application endorsed by P/T Association
- Fluency in Canada's official languages an asset
- References provided (two of which are registered Softball Canada umpires)
Selection Process
The following procedure will be used to select the new National Director of Umpires:
- Review and ranking of Candidates by a Selection Committee comprised of three members:
- Softball Canada President or designate
- Board Liaison to the Officiating Development Committee
- Chief Executive Officer or designate
- Board approval and ratification of recommended candidate
