Guatemala City, Guatemala - Team Canada took on the U.S.A. on Thursday, November 17 in the playoff round in the double elimination side of the bracket in the 2022 WBSC Women’s Pan American Championship, losing 8-2.
Canada was able to jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Larissa Franklin (Maple Ridge, B.C.) led off the game with a single to right field and Kelsey Harshman (Delta, B.C.) was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Alysen Febrey (Peachtree City, GA.) then singled to bring Franklin home and put Canada up 1-0. Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ont.) then cashed Harshman from second with a run-scoring single of her own putting the maple leaf ahead 2-0.
Canada was unable to hold onto the lead in the bottom of the first inning when USA responded with 5-runs, all of which were credited to starter Dawn Bodrug (Georgetown, Ont.).
Canada was able to put two runners on in both the second and third innings but could not come up with a hit to score them.
Morgan Rackel (Calgary, Alta.), who came on in relief in the first inning, worked two scoreless innings, scattering three hits and striking out three batters.
Canada trailed 5-2 heading into the fourth inning. U.S.A. was able to push two more runs across after a walk and two singles. With the score 7-2, Ruby Anderson (Victoria, B.C.) entered in relief. In 2.2 innings of relief, Anderson gave up only two hits and one earned run.
Canada was able to get runners on in the last three innings, but once again the run scoring hit continued to elude them as they were not able to push anymore runs across.
Febrey paced the Canada offense going 3-4 on the day. Harshman was on base three times, and both Larissa Franklin and Janet Leung also tallied a hit for Canada.
