Guatemala City, Guatemala - The Canadian Women’s National Team is now 3-1 t the 2022 WBSC Women’s Pan American Championship after falling to Cuba 7-2 at Carlos Cano Gomez field on Tuesday.
Canada opened the scoring in the top of the first when Kelsey Harshman (Delta, B.C.) hit a solo home run over the left field wall to put Canada ahead 1-0.
Morgan Rackel (Calgary, Alta.) got the start for Canada. A leadoff triple and a sac fly evened the score at 1 but Rackel recorded a fly out and a strike out to end the inning.
In the top of the second, Canada reclaimed the lead after Erika Polidori (Brantford, Ont.) reached on an error and was brought home by an Emma Entzminger (Victoria, B.C.) sacrifice fly.
Cuba was able to once again tie the game in the top of the second inning with their second sacrifice fly of the game.
Dawn Bodrug (Georgetown, Ont.) came on to relieve Morgan Rackel in the fourth inning. Cuba was able to tally five runs on four hits to push the lead to 7-2. Morgan Rackel re-entered the game and was able to close out the fifth inning with a big strike out and ground ball to give the Maple Leafs a chance.
Larissa Franklin (Maple Ridge, B.C.), Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ont.), Kianna Jones (Surrey, B.C.) and Grace Messmer (Cloverdale, B.C.) all tallied hits, but Canada was unable to mount a comeback as they fell to Cuba by a final score of 7-2.
Canada continues their tournament with a doubleheader Wednesday, November 16 starting at 18:00 CST against Team WBSC, followed by a match up against Mexico at 20:30 CST.
