Monteria, Colombia - The Quick Story:

Canada split a pair of Super Round games on Wednesday, dropping a 4-1 game to Mexico in the morning before doubling up Cuba 4-2 later in the afternoon. Team Canada threatened on a few occasions in the first game but only managed to get one hit, while Denny Benson continued swinging his hot bat to fuel Canada’s offence in the second game.

Key Moments – Game 1 vs. Mexico:

Mexico wasted no time getting on the board with a base-clearing double with two outs in the bottom of the first and added their fourth run on a solo homerun the following inning. Canada’s best chance to score came in the sixth, as they loaded the bases on two walks and a single before another walk brought one run in to score. With two outs, Max Major hit a deep fly ball that was caught at the wall to end the threat.

Notes:

  • Nick White registered Canada’s only hit with a single in the sixth.
  • Canada drew four walks, with two by Quinten Bruce, one to Jordan Pomeroy and one to Mitch McKay.
  • Devon McCullough took the loss in the pitcher’s circle, allowing four runs on four hits.
  • Tyler Randerson pitched four solid innings of relief, allowing only one hit and striking out six. Jordan Hudson closed out the last inning issuing one walk.
Box Score: Mexico 4 vs. Canada 1

Key Moments – Game 2 vs. Cuba:

After Cuba took a 1-0 lead on a passed ball in the top of the second, Canada responded immediately when Connor Brooks worked a two-out walk and scored on a two-run homerun to right by Denny Benson. Canada added an insurance run the following inning when Nick White pulled a triple inside the right field line and scored on a ground out to first. Cuba pulled back within one with a run in the fifth, but Canada responded once again when Jordan Pomeroy doubled and later scored by beating the throw to the plate on a fielder’s choice.

Notes:
  • Benson hit his third homerun of the tournament to get the Canadian offence.
  • Nick White tripled and Jordan Pomeroy doubled, with Derek Hyde and Dallas Kipfer each adding a single.
  • Justin Schofield threw five strong innings for Canada, allowing two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts.
  • Tyler Randerson earned the two-inning save, allowing two hits and two walks but holding Cuba without scoring with two strikeouts.
