Acapulco, Mexico – Canada’s U15 Women’s National Team headed into today's game with back-to-back wins under their belt but ultimately fell short 17-0 to the undefeated United States to complete the Super Round.
The start of the game looked promising for Canada, as Canada’s lead off batter, Sara MacDonald (Maple Ridge, B.C.) reached first on a dropped third strike by the American catcher. Robyn McIsaac (Langley, B.C.) hit a single up the middle a couple of at-bats later but MacDonald was thrown out at the plate attempting to score.
The United States offence scored their first run after back-to-back doubles. They would follow that up with two consecutive singles, adding two more runs. An additional two runs would score on a Canadian error. The United States ended the first inning with a three-run home run, extending the score to 8-0 after the first.
The United States continued scoring in the second inning, with a single leading off the inning, followed by a single up the middle to drive in another run. A triple and a sacrifice fly scored two more runs to end the inning, pushing the United States lead further to 11-0.
In the third, Team USA hit two consecutive singles and a walk to load the bases. Two more singles drove in two more runs and kept the bases loaded. They would score their final runs on a grand slam to center field, securing the 17-0 victory and giving Canada their third loss of the Super Round.
Kenzie Newman (Regina, Sask.) started the game in the circle, pitching two-thirds of an inning while striking out one batter and allowing seven hits and eight runs. Chelsea Tan (Surrey, B.C.) came in for a relief appearance, pitching in an inning and a third of work, striking out one batter, walking one, and allowing nine hits and nine runs.
Despite the loss, Canada will play in the bronze medal game tomorrow, March 28th, against Puerto Rico at 1:00 pm CST (3:00 pm EST).
