Softball has been included in the Canada Summer Games since the inaugural event held in Halifax/Dartmouth in 1969 as was a mixed sport (male and female). Starting in 1981, The sport was split into a male and a female category. Despite many efforts to keep the male category on the program, it was decided to drop the male component of the game for the 2009 Canada Summer Games, but the female category remains included.
